Logan and I visited another studio today. Picking one, like Logan said earlier, is turning out to be quite a process. We need to make the decision soon, but we're not ready yet. Last Friday, we played a short set at Mulligan's Pub in East Grand Rapids. It was a good opportunity to get out and play the folklore songs we have been working so hard on. We definitely needed a change of scenery and we had a good time too. We'll be back in the shed on Thursday to continue work on the album. Good progress has been made the last 2 weeks-let's make it 3 in a row.

We have been busy checking out and talking to various recording studios to start to narrow down our options on where to record our album. Jon and I checked out one very good studio prospect last Sunday and we will be going to tour several more in the upcoming weeks. Where we record and who does the sound engineering on the album is a very big deal. This will probably be one of the biggest decisions we have to make in this process. Where, who, and how you record a song has a much bigger impact on the overall outcome than you would think. We are hoping for a sound engineer to be our "5th" band member to work with us in the recording sessions. It's all been pretty exciting and stressful so far!
Logan This week we put our individual work on the line. After spending hours and hours individually working at home with click tracks tonight's practice put that hard work to the test. We have already established a base time for each of the folklore songs and have been practicing to that time. When we came together thursday night we all played together, headphones on, for the first time and........
Wow, it went really well. Discovered that each song has a unique feel when played straight up together, adding the click track forced us to stay in time and in turn changed the feel of the song. Not in a bad way but in a new realization way :-) We found out that the more we play together, headphones on, the better our time will be come studio time and the more relaxed the songs will become. Trying to get that live feel and good time to match up is the goal for now. Spread the love Jon _ We continued this week with the fine details of each song. We started playing along with a metronome too. It made things interesting to say the least. For the last few weeks, we have been recording the songs at practice. Then, during the next week we all listen and make notes on any ideas we might have. The next week, we discuss any possible changes and implement some of them as we go. This is proving to be positive process. Like Logan and Jon mentioned, we’re all on the same page and we are coming up with some great ideas. I think we are making good progress.
Levi We are finding that we are all very in tune with each other on the concepts and ideas for this album. From recording techniques, to song arrangements, to artwork. when you get down to the finer details of a project like this, it would be easy for four people to have very different views, but so far that is not the case. Last night we spent quite a bit of time going song by song and establishing our initial thoughts on the recording techniques we will be using in studio. There is quite a range ys we plan to capture different songs. Some songs we will build track by track and overdub all instruments one at a time. Other songs we are going for a full on live recording, and ohers will be somewhere in between. Certain songs require the connection as musicians to be playing live to capture the level of intensity and emotion that it requires.
logan Had our first practice geared totally towards the recording of the "American Folklore" Album. Planned out our wish/to do list and time schedule for the next three months. Just getting this agreed upon and set in some sort of document has really got us excited. Now we can focus on rehearsing and fine tuning the songs for the album.
Keep checking back for weekly updates on our progress. Support local music Jon |
